Writer
About Me
Like many writers, I spent my younger years scribbling away in my bedroom or snuggled up with a book. The best gift ever was a typewriter when I was nine years old. I wrote terrible plays and forced my friends to play bit parts in them. I, of course, had the starring role each time.
My other love was detective work. I had the standard issue kit – fingerprinting, spy glasses that could see around corners, listening devices – but a distinct lack of real-life-crime to solve never matched the stories in my head.
So, it’s no surprise that I am now writing a crime series for children.
Current Work
I am in the midst of writing a middle-grade children’s book: My Life of Crime.
When 12 year old Cal finds the diary of Jim, a man wrongly convicted of a murder, he’s determined to prove his innocence. Cal’s friends join his investigation and start to uncover vital clues. But someone is trying to stop them. What lengths will they go to to clear Jim’s name?
This book is the first in a series featuring the Justice Misfits a group of school kids from South London.
My Writing Life
I find hanging out with other writers inspiring and have been a member of The Novelry since 2017. I was (joint) runner-up in this year’s Firestarter competition:
Here’s what the very lovely writers and editors at The Novelry said about my work in progress:
“The opening lines of MY LIFE OF CRIME by Sam Hudson had us smiling, charmed by the voice of the young narrator, Cal. But when the first chapter flips from humour to poignancy, we’re completely involved in this story, wanting the best for our kid hero – and wanting to read on.”
I have an MA Creative Writing from Birkbeck, University of London, with a short story – The Butcher’s Widow – published in the Mechanics Institute Review
I have always been passionate about supporting children to love books and was a Trustee of Booktrust for a number of years.
I also get to write as part of the business I run – Überology – and have written for a range of publications as well as commissioning podcasts, short films, and live events.
